How to Properly Wear Garter Straps
Although breeches and tall boots are an essential part of horse show attire for adult English riders, proper show apparel is different for childen and tweens. The rate at which children grow makes purchasing closely fitting tall boots impractical, so young riders are allowed to show in short ankle-high boots called paddock boots paired with a type of breeches, called Jodhpurs, that extend to the ankle and end in a cuff. To prevent jodpurs from riding up as the rider rides, a leather strap- called a garter- is worn just below the knee.
To put on, place the garter strap just below the knee, center the buckle on the outside of the leg. With these velcro straps there's no guesswork or twisting to get the buckle centered, just hold on place and connect the velcro smoothly along the inside of the leg.
